What’s Up! [Video Blog]

I have to admit – I have not done a video blog in over a year (bashful face). Not because I didn’t like them – I just started to not have the time to brainstorm what to say, tape it, edit it and upload it. But, enough with the excuses.

I owe you guys a good update on what’s new with me and this blog so you know what to expect from here on out.

This video will explain what my ‘new’ job entails, why I love working in the Boston start-up scene, and three main topics this blog will now be focusing on.

As I say at the end of the video, please feel free to share blog post ideas you’d like to see published on here (and I do welcome guest posts on occasion as well).

As always, thanks for being an awesome reader!

PlacePop Demo Review Part II

A few months ago I was introduced to a new entrant into the location-based market called PlacePop. They contacted me and asked for my input because I am active in the smart phone and location-based markets. I made my first demo review of this application here.

There have been many new improvements to this application recently, including a much simpler user interface, ability to search for people to follow, affinity programs, and integration with other languages.

Check out my second demo below and let me know what you think!

Blogging’s Offspring – Podcasts & vblogs

Blogging over the past ten years has become increasingly popular; blogging is now main stream. Almost everyone seems to be posting online diaries, advice, recipes and their thoughts online.

Whilst the first offspring to blogging, podcasts (audio blogs) gained much media attention it failed to capture the imagination of most webmasters. Indeed, the medium lacked the immediacy of information access that we have grown so accustomed to on the internet.

Blogging’s most recent offspring, video blogging – commonly known in the community as vblogs, are however, gaining increasing favor. Similar to blogging, regular posts result in return visits by visitors. Many video bloggers – “vbloggers” use RSS feeds in order to deliver updates instantly.

vBlogging for an Existing Blogger?

If you already regularly blog, then you’re probably thinking whether a video blog would add value to your existing blog. Think of it this way – it’s difficult to portray humor and sarcasm on a webpage, moreover, it’s also difficult to establish a personal relationship with your audience. Videos are also useful for providing tutorials, showing what to do rather than merely explaining.

If you consider your persona more captivating than your writing a vblog could be useful to you.

Video blogging doesn’t necessarily need to replace your existing blogging style, consider videos as a supplement to what you’re currently doing. A video can be much more powerful than simply telling a story in words. Consider watching a video about a hurricane vs. reading about it.

See what I mean?

What Do You Need To Video Blog?

In order to video blog you need a device that can capture video – you may wish to use a web cam, video camera or your digital camera. All of these devices are fairly affordable, and you’ll probably find that you already have an existing device that can create video for you – consider using this existing device prior to buying something new.

You’ll need to host your video somewhere – perhaps you have your own hosting, or would prefer to use youtube.com.

Vblogging – The Future

Given the personal relationship that can be developed by vBlogging, it’s my opinion that video blogging is going to obtain increasing favor, particularly amongst marketers.

Amazing New Technologies!

When I started reading about some of these incredible developments, I stopped and thought, “Is this real?!”

Some of the technology coming out today and in the near future is almost unfathomable! I read TechCrunch, Mashable, Popular Science, and many other high-tech blogs on a daily basis and have come across a few unbelievably amazing pieces of technology and services that I want to share with you all.

It is amazing to think that if in 2010 this technology is so out there yet so close to being created, what will the new technology be in 5 years from now? 10 years?

Enjoy!

Microsoft: Play in the water without getting wet!

NASA: Incredible avatar technology that can be ready in 1000 days! Almost unbelievable, right?
Read the article by Popular Science on this new technology here.

Twitter: Find your Twitter friends in real life right from your iPhone!

Last, I’m sure most of you have heard of Google’s Googles. Here is a review of this great app on the Android phone.

Meebo iPhone Application Review

This is the third of many iPhone application reviews that I will be doing.

This review is a demo of Meebo, an integrated chat platform that allows you to import your contacts from several social and instant messaging sources on your iPhone all into one place. This allows for convenience, less applications on your phone, and the ability to keep in touch with friends anywhere all in one place.

If you have Meebo, let me know your thoughts. If not, would you get it after this review?

Vlingo App Review: The Power of Speech

Vlingo is a new, voice-activated iPhone application that is free for users thought iTunes. (There is also a paid version for Blackberry that you can see on the website).

Vlingo has the following features:

Auto-dialing
Google Map searches
Google/Yahoo search engine queries
Social media status updates

The way Vlingo works is by pressing the “Press + Speak button” then speaking your specific command (suggestions are given under “what you can say” on the app. The app then “thinks” for a few seconds, and then executes your command.

Two drawbacks:

1. Time delay; it takes at least 5 seconds to process each request, not efficient for those that need an instant result
2. Speech is very sensitive; it may misinterpret a word, such as recognizing “block” instead of “blog” when spoken

Other than that, it is one of my highest rated apps that you should download and try out today. It is a great time saver, is safe to use in the car and on the go when you cannot type on your phone, and it is an up and coming technology.

Newly Released PlacePop: iPhone App Review

Last week I was featured as a guest blogger for Convertiv, the company I work with on freelance social media and Internet marketing strategies. I wrote a blog post titled “What is Next for Location-Based Apps” where I discussed the multi-layered environment of smart phone applications that have geo-location and geo-social capabilities. Two days after the post, a woman from a new geo-social application company called PlacePop contacted me directly and said:

“I noticed that you have been covering location-based applications recently on the Convertiv blog, and since you are following the developments in this space, I wanted to reach out to you and introduce a new app called PlacePop.”

Of course, I said yes and was excited to give PlacePop a trial run. I decided to turn my review into a video blog post for all to see. It is truly an excellent application that has features that are superior to many existing location-based applications.

Watch the below review and demo to see my evaluations.

Check it out yourself and let me know your thoughts!

Businesses Must Understand Generation Y

A powerful and informative video on who Generation Y is, what they want, how they work, what they buy, and what they want from YOU, the business. This video sums up a lot of previous blog posts I have written explaining their habits and desires. You must understand why this generation is different and what this means for your marketing program.

What are some questions your business has in regards to marketing towards this eclectic and different generation?

Top 6 2010 Superbowl Ads

Overall, I was not impressed with the Superbowl ads. In past years they were definitely much more entertaining and humorous. Below are my top 6 picks, what were yours?

1. Flo TV- My Generation Ad

Used an upbeat song, and showed major milestones from different generations so it was relatable to many different people. Then progresses to how that generation can connect digitally today. Very cool and well played!

2. Vizio Beyonce Ad (Internet Apps)

Very cool ad! Starts with an intrigue factor by featuring many significant viral Internet events (Danny after the Dentist, Beyonce, etc). Then moves on to show how technology is all being put in one place to manage and view all your social and search sites in one place. I can’t wait to get one of these now!

3. Budweiser Bridge Ad

As always, Budweiser pulled it off again. This ad seemed to go along with the saying “desperate times call for desperate measures.” They demonstrated the dedication of loyal beer drinkers with a spice of humor.

4. Snickers Superbowl Ad

Humor, plain and simple. This ad appealed to people of all ages and used exaggeration to make it funny to anyone.

5. Budlight Asteroid Ad

Another successful Bud commercial that ties in humor and exaggeration to demonstrate the dedicated and fun loyal customers of their beer. Beer ads always seem to work quite well during the Superbowl (I wonder why…)

6. Doritos- House Rules Ad

This ad was quite funny and relatable to kids and adults alike. Overall it was a great execution!
