Application Overload, Or Is It?

If you own a smart phone, how many applications do you have? On average, how many of them do you use on a regular basis? Do you find that they allow for more productivity, or do they inhibit you from getting things done?

The below video is one that is similar to so many news stories today regarding smart phone applications. Are they good? Are they bad? Why do people use them? What are the top apps to use?, etc.

A major question people have been debating over is whether the abundance of applications leads to more productivity or an inhibition of productivity.

Being an iPhone owner myself, I find myself overwhelmed by the amount of applications available for download. However, people use apps for different reasons, and the pros and cons can both be fairly argued. I have reasons for both, but more strongly support the abundance of applications since they can lead to productivity, if used right.

Benefits of the abundance of applications:

  • Increased data sharing
  • Fits everyone’s interests
  • New business opportunities
  • Improved exchange of ideas
  • Less costly than computer applications
  • Users can find anything, anywhere, anytime
  • Increase in innovation with the more apps that are being created
  • Allows users to connect with others in ways otherwise not possible, 24/7
  • Helps increase productivity time (ex. tip calculator, quick recipes, money management, etc.)
  • Employes can be productive and stay in touch even when out of town or out of the office
  • Users can become smarter (Identifying objects, accessing news, and taking prep exams)
  • Drawbacks of the multitude of applications:

  • Over-reliance on technology
  • Security issues with information sharing
  • Consumers may be turned off by the overwhelming amount of choices
  • With so many games and entertainment apps, users can get distracted from important tasks
  • Anti-social aspect; people become so obsessed with their apps that they tend to ignore others
  • Are you an app supporter or opponent? What are your favorite applications?
