Businesses Must Understand Generation Y
A powerful and informative video on who Generation Y is, what they want, how they work, what they buy, and what they want from YOU, the business. This video sums up a lot of previous blog posts I have written explaining their habits and desires. You must understand why this generation is different and what this means for your marketing program.
What are some questions your business has in regards to marketing towards this eclectic and different generation?

Alright, excellent multi-media format until the messaging went from sound bites to footage. Walked away asking myself what did I learn. What is the communication? Is this Gen Y’s world and I am happening to live in it? Wow! We will definitely have to open up a conversation.
Generation “Y” – had their shot. They blew it. They’re a blip on the demographic radar. It is BOOMERS and MILLENIALS and by 2012 – MILLENIALS will outnumber the BOOMERS.
If you want to know how to save your biz – be prepared to have a product portfolio that speaks to the two largest, yet two completely opposite demographic groups there are.
Gen Y is an angry misinformed group of folks who were coddled by their “enabling” parents. They never worked for one thing, were “given” everything by parents who thought it would be better to give their kids what they didn’t have as children.
Not that the MILLENIALS don’t have their issues – they are information obsessed – but they’re uncaring as to whether it’s been vetted. They want what they want, WHEN THEY WANT IT. If not, they’ll go get it or have someone make it for them. They think everybody on the team should get a trophy instead of the most valued member of said team. They need endorsement and encouragement from a wide source of peers and on a positive note … most are actually “friends” with their parents.
If you’re running a business, and you’re reading this … screw Gen Y – go figure out how to make the MILLENIALS happy and how to take their money.

Jb, as reported by Wikipedia, Millenials and Gen Y consumers are the same: “Generation Y, also known as the Millennial Generation or Generation Next or Net Generation,[1][2][3] describes the demographic cohort following Generation X. Its members are often referred to as Millennials[4][5] or Echo Boomers[6]. As there are no precise dates for when the Millennial generation starts and ends, commentators have used birth dates ranging somewhere from the mid 1970s[7][8][9][9][10][11][12] to the early 2000s.”
We also are not just a blip on the demographic radar, we are actually a huge and powerful age group that cannot be ignored, not because we don’t want to be, but because businesses can’t afford to ignore us. Also, we are not misinformed, we just gain our information from sources other than where Baby Boomers get their news. We depend on the Internet, friends and family to give us our daily information, meaning we are one of the most connected and social demographics ever. This provides
great word-of-mouth opportunities for businesses today, which is a plus. I hope this helps clarify, I appreciate your point of view.
Generation Y is also considered the Echo Generation because we are the offspring of Baby Boomers. Therefore, we too are a huge and powerful generation that can’t be ignored. In fact, businesses must understand why we are different than others, not in negative ways, but positive. We are revolutionizing traditional media, changing out information consumption habits, and using new media, at a rapidly increasing rate.
I appreciate most of the points that this video makes, I just think it’s done in a very brash, “take it or leave it” kind of manner. This approach doesn’t ever work (unless you’re negotiating for a used car).
I don’t see why Gen X or Baby Boomers have to bend over backwards to “the new way”. Why can’t there be some sort of convergence in the middle?
Thats one of that article which it really is worth to bookmark. Definitely nice submit.
Great, thanks!
